Democracy distributes power and demands accountability.
Authoritarianism concentrates power and eliminates accountability.
Corporations are drawn to the latter because accountability is expensive, power concentration enables lucre, and corporations themselves are fucking sociopaths.

Why Do Corporations Love Authoritarianism?
The least fun fact you're likely to read today: IBM helped the Nazis. Through its German subsidiary Dehomag, "Big Blue" custom-engineered Hollerith punch card machines specifically designed to meet the Third Reich's requirements for track…Joan Westenberg (westenberg.)
A Win for Encryption: France Rejects Backdoor Mandate
In a moment of clarity after initially moving forward a deeply flawed piece of legislation, the French National Assembly has done the right thing: it rejected a dangerous proposal that would have gutted end-to-end encryption in the name of fighting d…Electronic Frontier Foundation

Swedish government, EU commission and others, take heed!
”France’s rejection of the backdoor provision should send a message to legislatures around the world: you don’t have to sacrifice fundamental rights in the name of public safety. Encryption is not the enemy of justice; it’s a tool that supports our fundamental human rights, including the right to have a private conversation. It is a pillar of modern democracy and cybersecurity.”

The fediverse is an ecosystem where you - not some incellionaire obsessed with eugenics - own your digital identity.
Where your social graph belongs to you, not an algorithm’s shifting fucking whims.
Where moving from one service to another doesn’t mean losing everything you’ve built and everything you’ve ever said.

The Fediverse Isn’t the Future. It’s the Present We’ve Been Denied.
For years, the internet has been shrinking. Not in size, not in data, but in ownership. A vast, decentralized network of personal blogs, forums, and independent communities has been corralled into a handful of paved prison yards controlled by a few m…Joan Westenberg (westenberg.)

First Porn, Now Skin Cream? ‘Age Verification’ Bills Are Out of Control
I’m old enough to remember when age verification bills were pitched as a way to ‘save the kids from porn’ and shield them from other vague dangers lurking in the digital world (like…“the transgender”).Electronic Frontier Foundation

Trump Calls On Congress To Pass The “Take It Down” Act—So He Can Censor His Critics
We've opposed the Take It Down Act because it could be easily manipulated to take down lawful content that powerful people simply don't like. Last night, President Trump demonstrated he has a similar view on the bill.Electronic Frontier Foundation
@lisamelton Little does he suspect that there are plenty of countries outside his who would mirror the critics’ content and have zero obligation to remove it.
… and that content on the internet can live indefinitely.
